  • Northwich, Cheshire
  • Ørsted’s patented REnescience technology combined with anaerobic digestion and waste sorting
  • 5 MWe / 120,000 tonnes MSW
  • 18 Months
  • Ørsted

Ørsted’s (formerly DONG Energy) REnescience Northwich facility will be the first of its kind in the UK. The plant will process 120k tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per year to recover 6MWe of energy through residual waste sorting, bioliquid extraction and anaerobic digestion.

Cobalt Energy was the Principle Contractor on site, managing the day-to-day running of the construction phase for Ørsted. Using our knowledge and expertise in construction of Energy from Waste facilities as well as our collaborative approach to co-ordination and problem solving we manage a multi-function team that will deliver all elements of the construction programme, Cobalt Energy also maintains stakeholder relations with neighbors and client.

Cobalt Energy manages the procurement and delivery of all civils and building trade packages and the installation of all process equipment packages procured directly by the client.

Coordinating with the Principle Designer and using our experience of site and industrial safety, we are responsible for construction, design and management (CDM) compliance, setting and maintaining the highest safety standards.

We have also sat on the Ørsted steering committee to advise Ørsted of the UK market and assisted in the development of the project from an early stage with particular emphasis on UK regulations, planning procedures and industrial relations.

To date the anaerobic digestion plant, G59 and Renewable Obligations Certificates (ROCs) deadlines have been achieved. Commissioning of the REnescience equipment is currently ongoing and is in line with the project schedule and budget.
