COBALT ENERGY’S ROLE
Ørsted’s (formerly DONG Energy) REnescience Northwich facility is the first of its kind in the UK. The plant will process 120k tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per year to recover 5MWe of energy through residual waste sorting, bioliquid extraction and anaerobic digestion.

Cobalt Energy was the Principal Contractor on site, managing the day-to-day running of the construction phase for Ørsted. Using our knowledge and expertise in construction of Energy from Waste facilities as well as our collaborative approach to co-ordination and problem solving, we managed a multi-function team that delivered all elements of the construction programme, Cobalt Energy also maintained stakeholder relations with the facility’s neighbours and client.

Cobalt Energy managed the procurement and delivery of all civils and building trade packages and the installation of all process equipment packages procured directly by the client. Coordinating with the Principal Designer and using our experience of site and industrial safety, we were responsible for Construction, Design and management (CDM) compliance, setting and maintaining the highest safety standards. Cobalt Energy also sat on the Ørsted steering committee to advise Ørsted of the UK market and assisted in the development of the project from an early stage with particular emphasis on UK regulations, planning procedures and industrial relations.

Commissioning of the REnescience equipment took place in 2018. A construction contract extension was delivered by Cobalt Energy in 2019 and completed on time and on budget.
