Cobalt Energy Colleagues Conquer the UK's Highest Peaks

Cobalt Energy’s second quarterly event of the year has taken place, with the team swapping the office for the great outdoors and taking on two of the UK's most iconic peaks – Scafell Pike in Cumbria and Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands.

The challenge brought colleagues together from across the business, testing resilience, teamwork and determination while providing an opportunity to strengthen relationships outside the workplace.

Scaling Scafell Pike

The Scafell Pike team travelled to the picturesque village of Ravenglass ahead of the climb, spending the evening overlooking the Irish Sea before setting off along the Wasdale Circular route the following morning.

Their journey to the trailhead took them past the stunning scenery surrounding Wast Water, with rolling hills, peaceful lakes and winding country roads providing a true taste of the Lake District.

The weather was on the team's side, beginning cool and overcast before clearing as they climbed to reveal spectacular views across Cumbria.

The notorious crossing of Lingmell Gill

The route was full of memorable moments. Crossing the fast-flowing Lingmell Gill required careful footing, leaving some walkers with wet feet, while fellow hikers provided plenty of entertainment. From one climber tackling the ascent in flip-flops while carrying a dog to another walking with a handbag in hand, it proved there's no single definition of mountain gear. The team also found themselves repeatedly overtaking and being overtaken by an energetic group of primary school children before finally leaving the crowds behind.

Reaching the summit of England's highest mountain was a proud achievement, marked with a celebratory photo featuring the Cobalt water bottle against the breath-taking backdrop.

Although the climb up felt manageable, the descent proved even more demanding. Tired legs, a few slips on the rocky paths and aching muscles the following day were a reminder that getting back down can often be the toughest part. The return journey to Ravenglass even included a surprise roadside sighting of a slow worm basking in the grass.

Battling Ben Nevis

Meanwhile, the Ben Nevis team experienced very different conditions in the Scottish Highlands.

While the route offered equally stunning scenery, the summit greeted the team with classic Scottish weather, as snow and ice covered sections of the path and added an extra challenge to the climb.

Despite the conditions, the team completed the climb in an impressive sub-six hours, experiencing all four seasons in a single day. There was plenty of entertainment along the way too, with walkers sporting a variety of outfits, including one group dressed head-to-toe in full cricket gear, complete with shin pads, highlighting the fun and diverse atmosphere of the Three Peaks Challenge.

Overall, both teams had a fantastic time and were rewarded with breath-taking views from the highest peaks in England and Scotland. The experience proved to be a team-building opportunity like no other, with everyone demonstrating resilience, determination and a willingness to support one another throughout the challenge.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the hikes. Your commitment, enthusiasm and dedication to your team made this an unforgettable event and highlighted once again that teamwork is at the heart of success. We look forward to seeing what challenge awaits us next!
