Ian has extensive experience in the design, planning, financing, construction and operation of large scale energy projects, accompanied by strong financial and legal acumen. He is skilled in contracts and contract setting, negotiation and dispute resolution.
Whilst his specific expertise is in project finance allied to risk management, Ian’s role includes the management of operation and maintenance contracts, and financial responsibility for the energy business units and thermal plants.
Ian also acts as an expert witness at planning inquiries and chaired the UK national conference on energy from waste (2014 – 2015).
David Ardern (Engineering Director)
David is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with extensive technical experience of thermal power plant engineering. He is a process engineering specialist, and his expertise covers a range of inputs including fossil, waste and biomass-fuelled plants.
His role includes the design and build of thermal power plants and energy recovery systems. He also oversees the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning process as well as contributing to contract management.
David is also experienced in delivering Owners/Investors Engineer services, providing professional and independent engineering technical expertise and contract delivery strategy.
Sharon Bates (Admin & Finance Director)
As our company accountant, Sharon has over 15 years’ experience working in the financial industry, across both public and private sectors.
She has worked for local government, providing independent audit provision, before moving across to commercial practice in the wider accountancy field.
Sharon’s role covers the full range of accounting and financial management both for Cobalt Energy but also from a client perspective, providing financial rigour for our projects and partners. She also oversees and maintains the HR function, sales and liaison with international partners, and general management for the company.
Dan Parkes (Head of Waste)
Dan is a Chartered Waste Manager with extensive experience in the industry covering the full spectrum of waste services and technologies. .
His experience includes contract development and bidding for large local authority projects and facilities working through the bid process for several waste management procurements. Dan has a comprehensive knowledge of waste treatment technologies including Anaerobic Digestion, MBT and EfW in addition to MRF, and RDF and SRF production technologies and has been active in securing planning permission and permits for several facilities in the UK.
John Davies (Head of Energy)
John Davies is a qualified Mechanical Engineer, specialising in Thermal Generation Plant Operations, Maintenance & Engineering Management. He project managed the Uskmouth Biomass Conversion Project, converting a single 120MW unit to 100% dedicated biomass fired.
He has an extensive knowledge of coal and biomass procurement, logistics, storage, combustion and safety related systems. He is proficient in all aspects of O&M mobilisation, process, ,safety and the implementation of business management systems.
John’s expertise in the renewable energy sector includes specialist knowledge of the ground mount and commercial rooftop photovoltaic markets. He is leading several renewable developments through the project pipeline
